Discovering a Passion
In 2009, amidst the surge of Brazilian Zouk in Australia and Europe, Izzy Washington encountered the dance that would change her life. Drawn to its fluidity, emotion, and creative expression, she immersed herself in a world of captivating rhythms and body movement. This initial spark not only ignited a personal passion but set her on a path to redefine dance education in Melbourne.
A Global Quest for Mastery
Determined to master Brazilian Zouk, Izzy embarked on an international journey that would take her across Europe and into the heart of Brazil. By 2013, she had spent several months fully immersed in Brazilian culture, studying under experienced mentors while also exploring related dance styles such as Lambada and Tango. Even after returning home, her hunger for knowledge led her to revisit Brazil on four separate occasions, each trip aimed at refining her skills and continuously updating the curriculum at DanceIM.
A Foundation Built on Ballet, Jazz, and Latin Dance
Before discovering Zouk, Izzy already had a strong foundation in the world of dance. With more than 20 years of ballet and jazz under her belt, she earned her dance teaching certificate—an achievement that spoke to her dedication and discipline. In 2006, she broadened her horizons by diving into Latin dances, including Tango, Salsa, and Bachata. This eclectic blend of influences prepared her perfectly to embrace Brazilian Zouk. By 2011, she began teaching Zouk, and in 2012, her vision materialized with the founding of DanceIM.
More Than Just Dance
What truly sets Izzy apart is her commitment not only to dance but also to understanding the human body and mind. Alongside her dance journey, she pursued academic studies in anatomy and neuroscience, aiming for a career in neurological physiotherapy. This unique combination of artistic flair and scientific insight allows her to design classes that are as insightful as they are inspiring. Her approach ensures that every movement is rooted in both technical precision and heartfelt expression—a blend that resonates deeply with her students.
A Respected Leader in the Dance Community
Over the years, Izzy has become a beloved figure within both Melbourne’s dance scene and the broader Australian Zouk community. Her teaching acumen, honed through years of practice and study, has led her to take part in prestigious events locally and internationally. Recognised as a qualified judge and celebrated for her emotive choreographies, Izzy’s influence extends beyond the classroom. Her dynamic presence enriches every performance, workshop, and class she conducts.
Building a Community of Empowerment
At the core of Izzy’s journey is a profound commitment to sharing the transformative joy of dance. More than just a teacher, she sees herself as a mentor and a catalyst for personal growth. By founding DanceIM, she created not only a dance studio but also a vibrant, supportive community. Here, everyone is encouraged to explore their creativity, celebrate their individuality, and build lasting connections. Whether you are taking your very first dance step or pushing your creative boundaries, DanceIM is a place where you are empowered to achieve your goals—on and off the dance floor.
